Review
This is the sequel of the book
Angelfall and the second book from the series; Penryn and the End of Days. I
must say that this book is a lot more adventure-ish than the first one, and it
didn’t lose that action galore that Angelfall gave us. I really enjoyed it
though the first half of this book was giving me headache because of Raffe,
where the hell did he go? I was like Penryn needs you. That’s when it hits me,
Raffe knew Penryn died, and he thought she died because of her loyalty to him. How
tragic is that.
So most parts of this book is all
centered on Penryn all by herself (Which is good, I guess.) because we get to
know Penryn more and we get to know how tough and smart she is. And this book
is much more morbid and darker compared to Angelfall, I am really pleased on
how she wrote that scenes, there comes this moment when I will stop reading
because of the excitement on what is happening. The experience on reading this
book is jaw dropping, especially on the scene where Paige ripped out Beliel,
which was unexpected.
Let’s talk about her Mom, she is insanely
genius. The tracker she made for her daughters is a good trick! We need more of
her in the third book; I guess I know now where Penryn inherited her skills. And
the twins, they need to fight more! I want to see them in action.
But I must admit, I really missed
Raffe’s presence with Penryn it looks like something is missing without him. So
when that moment came, the moment when they see each other again, it was
perfect.
But it’s not until his eyes meet
mine that a jolt of recognition passes between us. I have no doubt that it’s
Raffe. But he fights his recognition of me. For a second, his defenses fall and
I can see the turmoil behind his eyes. He saw me die. This must be a mistake.
This glittery girl doesn’t look anything like the street waif he traveled with.
Yet… His step falters and he pauses, staring at me.
At one moment I really felt that
I am the character who saw his long gone friend. Then the humour of both of
them came back, it’s one of the things really like about them.
I look up to say something but he
puts his finger to my lips and whispers, “Don’t talk. You’ll just spoil my
fantasy of rescuing an in- nocent damsel in distress as soon as you open your
mouth.”
And this,
“You’re cute when you’re afraid.”
I give him a dirty look. “Yeah, you’re cute when you’re afraid too.” He
actually bursts out laughing. “You mean I’m devastatingly handsome when I’m not
afraid. Because you’ve never seen me afraid.” “I said you were cute, not
‘devastatingly handsome.’”
It’s cute when they done that. I
could read the book with just both of them having this type of conversation. I
bet I’m not the only one who would want that, right?
Also I really like how Susan
emphasized the political issues here, but I really need more background story
for that and I need to know why did the Angels invaded the Earth and the great power
that Paige might be holding. Maybe that’s why she chopped it into five books;
she wants to give the answers to the readers bit by bit. And the ending of this
second book is really stunning. Hands down again to Susan Ee.
But there is one thing I cannot
accept, the release of the third book is not until next year!
