ILLUMINAE BOOK REVIEW

Title: Illuminae
Published on: October 20, 2015
My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

SYNOPSIS

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.

This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet's AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it's clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she'd never speak to again

Your typical girl-meets-boy that turned into a discombobulated maniac sci-fi novel!

READ MORE FOR THE ACTUAL REVIEW

I finished it two days ago and I still don't know how to start or what to say in this review. It left me with just ellipses to confer, and by saying that it doesn't mean I disliked it. It's the other way around actually, I adored it so much it left me with silence but also the craving to want more.

Illuminae follows the story of Kady Grant and Ezra Mason, the book didn't technically started with them but with a memorandum in which you will find when you start reading the book. Then after that prologue-ish part, it will be followed by a set of interviews of both characters. Though they are interviewed in different places at the same time. Kady is in Hypatia while Ezra is in Alexander. Oh and before I forget, they used to be in a relationship. Sucks? Yes. More plot twist to come my friend.

Since I've mentioned Hypatia and Alexander, I will make a short info on what they are so you will not be entirely spoiled. They are two science vessel in space that carries thousands of people. You read that clearly? SPACE. The setting of this book is in the outer space! A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away-- wrong quotation but I believe you got the idea already! There are no lands in this book(or maybe a little). Only stars, space vessels and milky way.

Another book added to the list of having the bad-ass characters ever existed. I'll give the hand and eyes to you in knowing why this book has the main leads.

This book has a lot things to offer. Literally. I think it has everything except moving pictures (if only we live in the Harry Potter world, that would be possible! But we're not so let's focus more on reality). I find this book of theirs really experimental because of the format they used. It's not your typical chapter-per-page-book but rather a compilation of documents, memorandums, hacking stuff, log-in/log-out queries and footage in written form. So basically the thought of one chapter before sleeping is unacceptable!

Reading the first few pages is a great struggle for me out of two reasons:
1.) As I look through the documents if this book somehow lead me into confusion. I think I'm not keen on it. I didn't follow the story as much as I follow the other novels with the classic narration.

2.) Distracted. I'm either sleepy or tired so never read a book when you're in state of that.

But after recovering from those pages, I adjusted well enough to keep going non-stop! Succumbing into the book between the night and midnight is the best feeling ever, the intensity of the plot is getting trickier and trickier as I jive between the pages, so it was really satisfying! And in that moment, time became just a mere word for me.

Let's talk about the plot! My dearest! This labyrinth they made is entirely insane! Yes. I read the synopsis but I never expected it to be so much vitriol and graphic that much, It's like I' reading the A Song of Ice and Fire while watching Star Wars and The Walking Dead, one extremely ride I suppose! Illuminae is a mad book in its way that in some parts I would just like stare into nothingness and ask myself on what did I just read.

Some scenes will just make you grip the book harder or make you close it. It actually awaken every brain cells I had in knowing what the gallifrey happening in the story. They are putting you unconsciously in the story without clarifying if you're in the safe zone or the other hand.

Getting through the pages and nearing it's end brought me some hazard in my mental reading awareness. It got me into tears. It teared me apart into pieces. It left me mourning.

And that ending, slashing like a knife, gave me scars to hold on and be remembered as I wait for the seque./ The last parts are surely the best and probably my favorite out of the bunch! Good riddance, I survived this so I'll tell the truth! Run. Run Clever Boy, Run!

I really commend both authors for telling a story that doesn't just involved reading, they did more than that. They introduced me and the other readers who have read this into something new and renovated literature.

Amy and Jay's voices are so powerful it can haunt you in any way you can think of. The story will creep out to you until you feel the horror of what you are reading. Illuminae is as action-packed sci-fi thriller in a box. A complete package of every adventurous reader would want.
